Flag of the City of Lake City, Minnonigan, FSA.

Symbolism

The flag itself is laid out as a basic map of Lake City, with the two white bars representing Lake City’s West Bank (left) and East Bank (right), with the Stone River separating the two as the light blue bar in the center.

The six-pointed white star in the center was original to the flag’s 1868 adoption and represents the opening of the Thomas and Canton Canal which spurred Lake City’s settlement and growth. A six-pointed star was chosen for its distinctive look and to separate the city flag from state and national flags, which generally use five-pointed stars.

In 1937, the two blue stars were added: the right to commemorate the Century of Progress exhibition hosted in Exposition Park, and the left to commemorate the establishment of Fort Sauganash (née Drummond) in 1804. Each point of each Star was also assigned a significance:

• Century of Progress (right) star celebrates Lake City’s cultural institutions, clockwise from top: the Lake City Public School system, the City University system (since consolidated with LCPS), the Institute of Art and Architecture, the Museum of Science and Technology, the Lake City Park District, and the Lake County Public Hospital system.
• Thomas-Canton Canal (center) star celebrates Lake City’s role as a transportation hub of the Federal States, clockwise from top: canal boats, shipping on the Lakes, railroads, aviation, the ‘J’, and automobiles.
• Fort Sauganash (left) star celebrates significant dates in Lake City’s history, clockwise from top: 1804 (establishment of Fort Drummond), 1821 (Fort Drummond Fire), 1838 (canal opening and city incorporation), 1872 (completion of the first bridge across the Stone River in Lake City), and 1937 (Century of Progress exposition). The sixth point was intentionally left blank to signify how Lake City’s history and evolution continues today, and is thus never "complete".

No additional stars have since been added to the city’s flag, although serious consideration was given to adding a fourth star following Lake City's hosting of the Pax Nova Games in 2000.
