Forum:Global and regional issues/ASUN - Nuclear Research Center Project
The ASUN Nuclear Research Center Project (unofficial name) is a major project within the collaborative sphere of ASUN. It's primary inspiration is the CERN organization and research center in Geneva, while also taking inspiration from similar centers such as SLAC, Fermilab (United States), DESY (Germany), ESS (Sweden), and others.
Although its primary function as a research center is the particle accelerator, it will also feature a broad spectrum of research complexes and facilities spanning into other areas as well. Alongside that, it would also be the drive force for other related or semi-related projects, like education centers for example.
The project is thought to be created on the border tripoint of Antharia, Niscavo and Qennes, roughly in this area. It was initiated by users Bixelkoven, clik and stjur.
All mappers, particularly other ASUN members, are welcome to add to the discussions.
History & lore
Here we will discuss the reasoning and history of such a project; why it was created, how did it work through time, and anything that may influence the mapping of the project
Name
What should the official name for the project be? It's a minor detail overall but I personally think a nice, catchy acronym is always a plus when creating names for these international projects. ante44 suggested NARSU to me, Nuclear and Atomic Research of South Uletha, which I thought was a concise name. Feel free to add other suggestions that we can discuss. Timboh (talk) 19:30, 15 February 2023 (UTC)
Origin
Where did the project originate from? The most notable real life counterpart, CERN, was initiated by a group of countries with the clear intent for it to become a major research project, so it had a fairly large scope at its inception. Alternatively, our project might have grown more "organically", beginning as a local laboratory in the region. In the latter case, the project might have begun as a local project in Antharia, Qennes and/or Niscavo, and after a while would have grown in scope, gained international partners, and eventually "absorbed" into ASUN. What does the rest of the community think? Timboh (talk) 19:30, 15 February 2023 (UTC)
- I can see both ideas be the reason for this project's creation - a laboratory complex started by the 3 countries (or by the Iviran organization, knowing that ASUN was the merger of a Mediterranean and Iviran organization), or a full-scale project initiated by ASUN. A good starting point for discussion would be the budget of the project. CERN costed 4.75 billion US dollars with more than a billion in yearly contributions from each of its members and associates, while ASUN's project is larger, hence more expensive. I like the idea of some smaller research institutes in the 3 countries starting way back, probably at the same date as CERN itself (1950s), as it's hard that the three countries could fund this massive project alone. Furthermore, the project could have gained traction, support and further investment from the entirety of ASUN to its present size. It could make sense that ASUN decided to upgrade an existing project with already somewhat ready facilities instead of construction one from scratch, although that doesn't forbid the organization for construction another one elsewhere in the future.
- I don't have any good reasoning for why it would specifically be located in these three countries, other than it being a project predating ASUN. Qennes, and I can assume the other two countris as well, has great interest in nuclear energy used in electricity (which is not the main focus of CERN), which could've expanded into particle physics and atomic research as well. List of facilities and internal projects
Here we will list all the facilities, centers, mini-projects that will be featured within the whole scope of this project. The real world centers like CERN have a large amount of facilities, so this list is imagined to be quite large. It is suggested that all listed items should be mapped eventually.
