Hello! It has been quite a while since I was away, but I have been thinking of this and thought to share this to view the opinions you guys have. Now this is a basic starting idea of a new sister project I have in mind, so it is all going to be basic, but still able to be understandable.

Why am I doing this? Well OpenGeofiction has been going on for more than a decade! So I was surprised when I first learned that, as usually these projects die out within 5 years, plus I do see benefits in having a sister project, I do know this is highly unlikely, but worth a shot!

Starting It: Now my idea is to get the world planned out, and view each others ideas, this can help get some ideas as what the idea of this new world will be, mainly the topography, continents, rivers, lakes, oceans, all of the basics, and I recommend setting up a wiki as a way to do this as it is where most of the world builders will be, and once its done you can submit what basic form of territory you want while the territories are set up, for example, if you want a territory based off Scotland, you will likely get it, but incase someone else wants it and if you are unable to get said territory due to the amount of people wanting it, you will get 2 other alternatives.

Naming: Now when everything needs naming, I recommend waiting, as getting a basic idea of the history of your territory could help, no matter if it's your territory, your country (if your territory is a subdivision), or your continent, so again, that will be something that needs to be talked about.

Mapping: Now when it is time to map, I have an idea that seems to help both getting in new mappers and keeping it realistic, every 2 weeks each territory should get a look at (if it hasn't been looked at already), and if there is a massive amount of anything that can be said as unrealistic, they get a warning, there will be a maximum of 3 warnings before you are told to temporarily halt and know some helpful techniques to help make realistic mapping, if they get another 3 warnings, they will lose their territory and sent to the beginner one. So what if they make improvements during a warning? Well of they have made at least some progress in fixing, they only get stuck at how many warnings they have until they have fix it all or they reach their 3rd.

Benefits and Drawbacks: Benefits: -It can help get new people into mapping. -It gives people a chance to put in major changes in a world. (Something that isn't really possible now) -It gives people new ideas for how such a world would be. (Similar to the one right above) -People who had quit may return with a new project. Deawbacks: -It would take a while for such a project to get started. -It may temporarily lower progress on the current OpenGeofiction.

Important Note: The current project (OpenGeofiction) can continue alongside this new idea I have in mind, so if someone would like to view and contribute to the original, they can, plus it keeps OHF's history alive and everything made isn't lost.

(I know this isn't likely to get accepted, HECK! It probably won't even be considered! I am mainly doing this as to try and do the best I can to help the community) Unsigned comment by RhodeIslandWV (talk).

Hello! These ideas are interesting but I am no admin so i have no say in that but what I do have to say is that if you have some programming knowledge and a spare pc to use as either a web server or just local for you to mess on you cam make your own OpenGeofiction! I attempted a while back on a local server but due to its limited ram (900mb) it could not do one of the steps in setting it up. If you are interested Luciano made a wiki article about setting up a server to run OGF's software here.
Because I lack good knowledge in the command line for Linux I just asked ChatGPT to and it gave working steps until my machine could not do it. Hope this helps! MiniMapper (talk) 01:01, 6 November 2024 (UTC)
Sounds like a frustrating exercise in trying to herd cats, backed up with an ongoing programme of bureaucracy. But as said above, if you think it's a grand idea then go ahead and have at it.
I think the various collab projects in OGF are one of its biggest strengths, but it's clear than even that scale of coordination is a lot of effort.
PS: it's important to sign your posts by typing four ~ tilde characters. Also, be sure to go map. /wangi (talk) 09:52, 6 November 2024 (UTC)
I am glad to see some support to this, I would have done this but due to my current state and lack of coding experience, I can't really do this, I have envision some ideas, and maybe it being a mix between the OGF World and our own world, like for example, the United States-equivalent starts in the west and expands east, like the world is flipped. RhodeIslandWV (Talk) 20:42, 6 November 2024 (UTC)
Well to just say the Federal States is already somewhat flipped. At least North/South. I can see it somewhat int resting to have a site that's alike to OGF but more open but not that much. But also, as I stated above if you really want to do this you can get a server or find a site that hosts free ones then ask ChatGPT to help you set it up because at least for me about 5 months ago I tried it and it was working but I hit my machines limit instead of its.
I do want to note though your example is already somewhat here on OpenGeofiction. The Federal States is somewhat inverted vertically when you look at it. Great Lakes States in the south, New England in the south, Alormen (FSA's Texas) is in the north, etc. I mean, the FSA is even in the opposite hemisphere.
Also, I want to mention above you said 'plus I do see benefits in having a sister project' and at least in my opinion, OGF is too small to need a sister project. I mean if it really does get filled or that many people want a different system there is another entire half of the planet open. That in itself is a sister project in my opinion.
All in all though I don't believe many people would use it if any. I think if you were to take a poll more than 70% would be satisfied with OGF. If you really want one learn command line basics, follow Luciano's tutorial here, can start with your own local server and see if many want it then put it online MiniMapper (talk) 02:37, 7 November 2024 (UTC)
I understand, but if you guys change your minds, you know where to find ideas. RhodeIslandWV (Talk) 12:00, 7 November 2024 (UTC)
From active mappers, from the existing site community? Don't take this the wrong way, but you made a similar "great idea" post two and a half years ago. /wangi (talk) 13:58, 7 November 2024 (UTC)

I do remember doing something similar, but I have not been really active in OGF until lately, and I do plan to return as a past-time thing, being simi-active, plus I have gotten a territory planned out, and will submit an application when I get the chance.
