The Territory ID (from OpenGeofiction:Territories, e.g. AR123a) and proposed name of the country |
AR120-08; Senaford
Physical geography | |

An overview of climate, topography and landscape of the country. It is advised to also create a sketch, you can add a link to this (hosted on imgur or similar) |
Senaford is similar to rural Virginia and West Virginia in the United States. Areas near the capital city of Huntington will resemble places like Leesburg and Fairfax VA, with land that is full of rolling hills and deciduous forests, with pockets of flatter land in between the gentle slopes. This area will have the climate classification of Cfa, with year-round precipitation (a bit lower in the winter), hot and muggy summers, cool and mild winters with some light snow potential, and all four seasons.
Moving farther west will lead into the more mountainous areas of Senaford, resembling places on Earth such as the Interstate 81 corridor through the eastern reaches of the Appalachian mountains. Land here will be more rugged than the area in the northeast of Senaford, with mountains here still being gentle enough to be forested, but steep enough that travel will be more difficult through the region. Numerous caves and caverns will dot the area, with places similar to Grand Caverns in Grottoes VA. The far northwest, closest to Cantonsville in Michisaukee, will host several "plateaus", or more rounded mountains. Limestone and coal will be plentiful in this region. This area will have the climate classification(s) of Cfa, Cfb, Dfa, and Dfb, depending on elevation and distance from the coast. This area will generally be drier than the eastern sections of Senaford, thanks to the mountains, but will still receive decent precipitation throughout the year, and around a foot or two of snow throughout the entire course of winter.
East-Central Senaford will be flatter than the mountainous west, but still have similar topography to the Huntington area. Rolling hills will be prevalent, but this area will be prime for farming, whether that be in terms of ground crops like corn and wheat or apple orchards. Lots of this area will be covered in lakes, wetlands, shallow rivers and creeks. The climate classifications here will be Cfa and Cfb, with moderate precipitation and mild temperatures year-round.
Southern and Southwestern Senaford will be similar to the mountainous area of the northwest. More pronounced mountains will be present here, but they will still be low enough to not be snowcapped year round and still will have trees on them. This area will have the climate classification(s) of Cfb, Dfa, and Dfb, with moderate chances of snowfall throughout the winter, and will generally not get as warm as the eastern reaches of Senaford.
The entire region will be above the fall line, so there will be no coastal plain area in the east.

Human geography | |
---|---|
A brief description of the territory demographics, economic development, land occupation, infrastructure and mapping style |
Northeastern Senaford will be the economic powerhouse of Senaford, being located so close to the city of Huntington. Cities in this area will be fairly suburban, with the majority of the population here traveling closer to Huntington for work. This area will be similar to Northern Virginia, counties such as Loudoun, Fairfax, and Prince William, with a heavy upper-middle class lifestyle and public transportation taking people deeper into the metro area. The development will slowly fade out as you get farther away from the urban core. A few other large urban areas will be present in this area, but they will still mainly be residential. A few government facilities for Huntington may be located in the far northeast.
In East-Central Senaford, there will be a large city (probably the capital city of Senaford), located at the junction of two proposed interstate highways (See Collab:Federal States/Transportation). This area will be similar to the northeast, but on a smaller scale, more akin to capital cities in the interior east of the United States such as Atlanta, GA or Raleigh, NC. Along the far east, there will be a string of development as well, along the proposed interstate (again, on the Transportation page), and there will likely be railroads connecting these towns as well, but for more industrial purposes.
Western Senaford will be much more rural. The mountains in this area will prove as a large roadblock between this area and the bustling metropolis(es) in the east. Towns out here will primarily be along the main roads, and this area will be much more economically poor than the prosperous east. Many towns out here will be based around mining operations, as there is a large presence of natural materials like coal, limestone, dolostone, and other calcium-based minerals. There will be a few slightly larger cities (like Pittsburgh PA, Knoxville TN, or Roanoke VA), but nothing like the larger cities in the east.
Along many of the major routes, somewhat close to areas of settlement, there will be the large material processing facilities, which take the raw materials mined from the areas in the west and turn them into something more useful for everyday life. This is what a majority of the railroads and major cargo routes in Senaford will be used for.
History & culture | |
---|---|
A brief description of the intended culture and language |
Senaford will be predominately Ingerish, with smaller pockets of Franquese and Castellanese spoken in small pockets of the larger cities in the east. Culture in the east is likely to be more rich in history, especially in places along the rivers and lakes where the initial colonists of the area were more likely to settle. In the rural areas of the east, a strong focus on farming has led to a strong agricultural culture, with many family-oriented people living in these communities. The areas around the cities, especially Huntington, are far more diverse, as the capital district is a melting pot of cultures from all around the Federated States and abroad. Out west, strong ties to music are common, with many folk songs originating from the small communities in the mountains. Storytelling was a large part of the past of people in this part of Senaford, and those were gradually appropriated to song, similar to the style of country music in the United States. Many small towns and counties host county fairs and festivals every year, especially around the season of plants blooming and the harvest season.

The {{coord}} template can optionally be used to link to the OGF map - it results in a nice formatted link. Or you can paste in a URL. |
All of my past mapping has been in Rhododactylia, predominately around the city of Bolstable here: https://opengeofiction.net/#map=11/-7.1870/169.5786&layers=B (this will be fairly analogous to the suburban and city center areas I hope to create in Eastern Senaford).
In addition to working on the city (mainly making the area to scale and slowly adding suburbs to the outskirts), I have worked on adding rural connections to other areas of Rhododactylia, such as my work on many of the roads heading north out of the area.
I plan to do lots more adding to the outskirts of the city in the coming several days, as well as adding a few small towns in the wooded and mountainous areas here: https://opengeofiction.net/#map=11/-6.3170/169.7520&layers=B, which should be analogous to my plan for Western Senaford.
One other area I've done a bit of work and hope to return to is Pearl City (https://opengeofiction.net/#map=15/-8.6909/172.7569&layers=B). While there won't be any coastal mapping in Senaford, this is my work for some of the smaller, but not tiny, towns.

- Hi, the scale helper is a good resource to compare OSM and OGF mapping at the same scale, see: https://wiki.opengeofiction.net/util/map_scale.html?map=C/13.453290487972382/-7.21349/169.47878&map2=OSM/x/38.87370/-77.15862&pxpt=0.2767&scale=50000 - you need to continue to refine, map more than just grids of unnamed roads. See Help:Making realistic cities. I think applying for a beginner territory would be a good idea - this would allow you to continue to improve your mapping, while being clean of other mappers and able to map to the target theme. Mapping could be considered for moving to a future successful full territory application. Thanks/wangi (talk) 11:01, 4 June 2024 (UTC)
