UL 10-15 - Norfric and Sufric

This area of Ingerland is broadly speaking flat and fertile. There is a distinct divide between the hillier west of the counties and the flatter eastern areas. The land meets the sea along the eastern and southern coasts - the eastern coast has long stretches of dune and tidal sands whilst the southern coast is more of an estuary with mud flats and salt marsh. Where the estuary meets the sea is a large area of saltmarsh which is a national park. The main river that forms the border between Norfric and Sufric lies in a fertile valley surrounded by man-made lakes, large areas of man-made drainage and coniferous forests planted to create hunting grounds for medieval kings.

The main economic activity in Norfric and Sufric has always been agriculture, particularly sheep farming, pig farming and arable use. The largest city is Salmouth (though its population is less than 450,000), a historic port which lies on the mouth of the River Sale. There are also ports on the estuary at Walport and Doveport, one of Ingerland's largest deepwater container ports sits just outside Doveport and the coast here is dotted with oil refineries and car manufacturers. Harbridge is best known for Harbridge University, founded in 1086, it sits on the confluence of the River Sale and River Harbourne. Eppingham is a quiet market town whose large church reflects the wealth of the medieval wool trade. St Aubyn is a cathedral city which is popular with commuters from the capital. There are only two motorways linking the capital city to Salmouth and linking Salmouth to the docks and manufacturing areas on the estuary coast.

Norfric and Sufric were once ancient kingdoms before Ingerland was united in the (?) 11th century. During the medieval period they were centres of wealth and trade in Ingerland with the wool trade bringing in a large income and connecting the port towns of Salmouth and Doveport to the rest of Uletha. Harbridge was for many years one of the largest and most important cities in Ingerland. After the (?) Great Plague they found their populations decimated with many villages being left abandoned. With the Industrial Revolution their influence waned and they began to be seen as rural backwaters, particularly the eastern areas which lie well over an hour from the capital city. In the present day there is a great disparity of wealth and prosperity, some coastal towns and villages in Norfric have attracted wealthy settlers from the capital whilst some areas of Salmouth and Walport are amongst the poorest in the country.

I have mapped Myrcia for many years. I have also contributed to OpenStreetMap in the UK, mapping most of my hometown of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk.

	Discussion for clarification & decision

Hello! This is a great application, and I'm glad you're interested in the project. I have a couple quick points of feedback before approving it, however.

• Unfortunately the elephant in the room has been a recent bout of inactivity. Do you think you'll be able to handle acquiring a second territory in addition to Myrcia, or are you looking to exchange one for the other? I'm just asking for clarification and if you think you'll be able to be handle the activity load long-term.
• Of course, the capital region is still in flux right now, and the urban agglomeration won't fill the entire space. Be prepared to make adjustments, as always, as things unfold with that. This will include potential changes to hydrology in the southwestern part of your region. Similarly, you'd need to work with any neighbor to the north on this as well.
• Feel free to divide the region into multiple historic counties instead of two. We're still working out how we want the regions to appear on the map (and it'll be a discussion to involve all region-owners). Our preference right now is not to have a ton of X and Y regions but rather names more akin to real-life generalisations (Midlands, East of England, etc.); this doesn't mean there won't be "X and Y" regions, but we would love to see some variety. Just something to think about.

Thank you for your response. Here is mine in turn.

• I have certainly had a recent period of absence from OGF which also coincided with a period of change and the deletion of the old OGF wiki. I am a full-time teacher with a commute that takes up 4 hours of my day on top of work and I am also a rugby player so this has left me without much time to pursue hobbies like geofiction which I have loved. I decided I wanted to come back to OGF and have made some additions to Myrcia over the last month or so which I am happy with. This summer I am moving away from London and will no longer be commuting so I will have more time to devote to hobbies like geofiction. I would not have put this application in if I thought I was going to abandon the project any time soon. Myrcia is a project I wish to retain, it is different to Ingerland with a different, more unique mix of cultures and a different language. I feel I would really like to get the chance to map something which is a more directly 'English-inspired' map and this territory particularly appeals as I live in East Anglia, was born here and am fascinated by its history and geography.
• My plan is to begin work on the coastal areas until the capital region is more fleshed out as it will require a lot of coordination to get the feel of that western side of the territory right.
• I am thinking of splitting the territory into three now having realised that it is somewhat larger than Norfolk and Suffolk. I think the western county will be a 'home county' akin to Hertfordshire with Norfric and Sufric being the northern and southern counties of the remaining eastern area.
