An overview of climate, topography and landscape of the country. It is advised to also create a sketch, you can add a link to this (hosted on imgur or similar)

Basic map

Working with what has been mapped in adjoining territories, the topography of the territory should consist of a major river along the UL11f border in the north, while the border region with Utterland and Ventria is mountainous. UL11k and Franqueterre lack major clues, but a river is already flowing from the southwestern border towards Kalm eventually. based on this the proposed topography exists of:

- a major mountain belt from west to east, starting at the Utterland border on going until UL11k

- a large rather flat 'plateau and hills' region north of this mountain belt, incised by some major rivers draining the mountains

- a large sedimentary basin where the main northern river (UL11f border) is located

- the extreme south will again be a plateau and hills region, drained by this major river that flows towards Kalm

- the peninsula where currently Lausant is located (will be deleted) has a typical ‘Varascan’ mountain topography (think of the average central German mountain range)

Located at 54 to 57° north, the climate is temperate to cold. The northwest is influenced by the mildening influences of the sea, and has a wet temperate climate (Cfb). More to the northeast the marine influences fades, and climate becomes continental and drier (Dfb and Dfc). The central mountain range has a typical mountain climate with altitude gradients and is wettest in the west and dries in the summer. The south of the territory has a clear continental climate with warm summers and cold winters (Dfb - maybe just Dfa).

Natural vegetation follow the logic of the topography and climate. Deciduous trees dominate in the northwest, grading into coniferous trees towards the east. The mountain range is dominated by coniferous forests at middle altitudes, and alpine meadows above the tree line. South of the mountains a deciduous and coniferous forests are combined with some local steppe-like grasslands.

On top of this natural landscape sits the human landscape (see also above). The northwest is the bread basket of the territory, dominated by cropland agriculture and larger cities. Also the southern part of the country has lot's of cropland. The northeast is colder and drier and has more meadows and forestry - think of a Scandinavian landscape. forests and meadows dominated the mountains, with orchards in the south oriented warm valleys.

A brief description of the territory demographics, economic development, land occupation, infrastructure and mapping style

The north-western part is most developed, with a two major harbors along the costs. Smaller cities dot the rivers in the north, and these river valleys are also the major (historical and contemporary) transport ways. Population density is highest near the coast and decreases towards the colder east. The mountain range is scarcely populated. Also, in the south cities are mainly located along the rivers. The transport network consists of a system of major highways combined with national roads. Rail tracks connect all major cities and a high-speed railway network has partially been developed, while it is still under construction in most of the territory. A lower part of the mountain range allows a north-south connection.

At a city level I am planning to develop cities around a pre-modern (medieval) city centre, surrounded by a modern city - think of many IRL Spanish/French/German cities. I would like to develop an own recognizable style for the 'modern' city parts - like the Eixample neighbourhoods you typically have in Spanish cities. Cities typically have a tramway, and only the top 2 or 3 cities would have a metro.

Economically the logic from above is followed: the northwest is most developed, followed by the river valleys. The northwest has an economy that has been historically based on a strong agricultural sector, followed by industrialization from the mid to late 1800s on, and then more recently the services sector became dominant. Some parts of the mountain regions as ell as the more eastern parts of the territory would have a resource (mining) based economy. Large parts of the territory would however have a combination of an agricultural economy with SMEs dominating the cities.

A brief description of the intended culture and language

scetch

Following the territory guidelines, a germanic culture is envisionaged. The northern poarts of the country will have Dutch (Lentian) placenames, where I want to especially put a lot of emphasis on Dutch etymology. A French influenced Germanic conlang will be used in the south, showing how historically this region has been influenced by Frenqueterre.

I prefer to spend most time on mapping, and less on making a very long and complicated history for the territory. Hisotrically bonds with Lentië have been strong, but at some time in the past (~1500AD) Atreisië became a French puppet state, braking the bonds with Lentië and developping a different culture and landscape. In the last century Atreisië has played an important role connecting Franqueterre to Lentië and the other nortwestern countries.

Atreisië is a modern democracy with good trade relations with its neighbours.

The {{coord}} template can optionally be used to link to the OGF map - it results in a nice formatted link. Or you can paste in a URL.

I currently own Fayaan which was mapped using a new world country into mind, but some parts have got a more European feeling. Fayaan City has been developed as a city with a more European style, including a metropolitan area with several cities. Other cities also have a more European style: check for instance Bierdamme Thornburg Region islands based on german/Dutch Wadden Sea Taurburg Arva...

Discussion for clarification & decision

I made some better sketches using JOSM:

  • geomorphology (gree: main mountains; light green uplands and hills region; other = sedimentary basins/river valleys)
  • human geogrpahy on top of that (red= main highways, orange = secondary; cities are drawn as circles with a 'place' symbol for the largest) Unsigned comment by Fayaan (talk).
Hello! Thank you for providing the new sketches. Those help a lot. Fayaan City is quite a good example of what you may accomplish in the long run with a new territory. Your more zoomed-out/non-detailed work shows good structure. What I'd like to see is another demonstration of a city center other than Fayaan City (Taurburg doesn't demonstrate the theme you're talking about very much). Here is what I propose: take a couple of days and map a historic core for a city in Lentia that can help showcase this. It doesn't have to be large or the entire city; you also don't need to put in all the buildings or things like that. The streets, plazas, cathedral, etc. would be more than enough to show a structure. Something akin to Emmen or 's-Hertogenbosh inside its old walls is more than sufficient. Again, I'm more interested seeing another example of how you'd map a historic (pre-1800) core of a city. I hope that makes sense.
Also, would you please clarify if this is a second territory or a territory swap. It helps to have that stated for the record-keeping to be clean.
Thanks! — Alessa (talk) 19:14, 20 September 2023 (UTC)
Thanks Alessa for the feedback. To be clear: I would prefer to keep Fayaan - although much of my early mapping doesn't meet any standards, it would hurt to see it gone. Off course I am open for discussion. Also: I will not try to mimic Dutch cities in this territory - this also doesn't make sense as their typical layout is often related to water which is less of a physical geography item in the requested territory. I would rather prefer to develop an own European-like style, probably including the more chaotic layout of roads that you can find in parts of Germany and most of France, Belgium and Austria, instead of the very 'planned' looking layout in the Netherlands (or large parts of Denmark).
Well, I can agree with Taurburg, although this was rather an example of the larger structures instead of the detailled mapping. Note the historic city (where the street pattern is too rectangular, I agree with that) and the nearby harbor that grew hystorically. Then the 'modern' city that is under development but inspired by Spanish Eixample neighbourhoods.
Other examples of detailled mapping include Huysburg] where the city is inspired on some Iberian (and Spanish colonial) cities with an old upper town, old lower town - you might recognize the combination of physical and human geography of some major IRL cities in it. And then a 18-19th century lower town. I am currently working on [https://opengeofiction.net/#map=16/30.5178/162.2113&layers=B<nowiki> Arva which has a more north European feeling - I hope this one can meet your request. Still under construction/improvement, but the general layout of the old (pre-industrial) town with the surrounding late-19th-century/early20th-century neighbourhoods becomes already apparant. Unsigned comment by Fayaan (talk).
Admittedly, I still have my reservations and would have preferred to see yet another urban example. Part of the reason I mentioned those two cities were their origins and lack of coastal Dutch structures at their cores. We are very excited about the conlang and different cultural aspects. Another Dutch state itself in that size would not have been approved. All that said, Bixelkoven and I have deliberated on the matter enough; we are going to go ahead with the request. Please be sure to work closely with the neighbors to the west, and be sure to emphasize the conlang and different cultural portions you mentioned. That is really exciting to see. Should you need help here, please ask.
As an aside, please don't forget to sign any posts you make on wiki forums or discussion pages with your signature (four tildes). Thanks! — Alessa (talk) 22:11, 5 October 2023 (UTC)

Work closely with your neighbors, and emphasize the conlang and different cultural aspects over replicating what is already in Lentia.
