Nawagan (also known as The Nawa) (Giishime: "Naawagaam") is a province in the Commonwealth of Deodeca. Nawagan is home to the cities of Fayette, Wadeville, Brightall and more. It's geography varies from flat prairie in the northeast, hilly and relatively untouched southwest, and the scenic view of Lake Amanecer. Fayette serves as the tech/innovation hub of the province, with other cities having a smaller tech hub in their downtown cores.
Etymology
Nawagan comes from the word Naawagaam in the Gishiime language that means in the middle of the lake referring to how the Gishiime seen themselves inside Nawagan. The Ingerish used the word as an official term for the area, calling it Nawagan instead of Naawagam.
History
Pre-Ulethan History
Before the arrival of the Ulethan settlers, Nawagan was inhabited by the Lumquah and Giishime people, who are said to have migrated through modern day FSA before arriving in the area. They resided nearby the lake which gave them a lot of food and lumber.
Many small empires formed, with the biggest spanning from modern day Greenford to Creekside named the Empire of the Lake in English. Smaller groups of Lumquah and Giishime went into the southwestern mountains and formed a mix of cultures, which was wiped after a small war between the Giishime and the new mixed tribe, this battle was passed down generations and many of the territory inhabited by current Giishime is the territory of this wiped culture.
Colonization
Many Ingerish and Franquese settlers started to settle the continent, with the province of Nawagan being taken over by the Ingerish, slight Franquese influence started to come to the province as Franquese settlers would come to modern day Fayette & Brightall. This Franquese community grew and inspired the naming of Fayette, which was formed in 1720 with the name Fort George before being named Fort Fayette, and then Fayette. More Ingerish settlers began moving into cities near the FSA border following it's independence in 1759, which created a loyalist and almost unwelcoming response to the Effesian culture, aspects of this culture remain in smaller towns, while not being unwelcoming to Effesians, they still prioritize Ingerland and Deodeca over the FSA. Fayette officially was named Fayette in 1759, as the population grew to 897 people, while Wadeville was founded by Sir Wade Jenkins' son Arthur Jenkins following his death in 1758. In 1901
Post Industrial Nawagan
Nawagan began to use Wadeville as the capital in 1901 due to it's small size, which did anger many people from Fayette, who thought Fayette was a much better option. By 1922, immigration from Uletha picked up with a huge wave of Ingerish immigration coming to Wadeville, Brightall, and Fayette. The Ingerish immigrants resided in the Fayette neighbourhood of Highland Park, where they formed Deodeca's first football league, named the Highland park league. The league contained 14 teams, each from different parts of the neighbourhood that played in different parks. This caught the attention of Andrew Fisher, who decided to create a bigger Nawagan League to merge Highland Park League into. By 1930 The Deodecan Football League formed importing the teams from the Nawagan League, and giving it's teams broadcast money, which gave Fayette FC enough to build a stadium and a fanbase in the province. By 1950 many strict immigration laws were lifted, allowing people from Arecales, Anrovia, Latina, Goytakanya, & Bonavista. This immigration turned both Wadeville & Fayette into melting pots of culture and even influencing the culture of both cities. By 1990 many refugees from Anrovia's island of Matrantie began coming to Nawagan to escape high crime rates and poverty, which created a small french and Matrantienne Creole speaking coommunity in small pockets of Payette & Sterling in the city of Fayette.
Modern Day
By 2001 Nawagan officially recognized Naawagam as another name for the province, which was much needed as the government used to treat the word as if it didn't relate to the province due to it's ingerish history. By 2005 Nawagan Provincial Police began building their own stations in cities outside of Metro Fayette & Wadeville. Which resulted in them building two in Harbridge, which had needed it the most. By 2010 Fayette's population began to slow down as many people in Fayette were moving out into the suburbs very quickly as home prices were incredibly low, as a result Harbridge, Bellhampton, Creekside, Brightall, Elmsmere, Decton, Elmvale, Wadeville, and New Wadeville which caused those cities to grow quicker than usual, with many moving in to other cities inside Metro Fayette a lot more than others. As a result hundreds of construction projects were approved from 2011-2014 which caused home prices to rise a smaller bit in those areas. By 2020, the city of Brightall experienced another population boom, bringing them from 96,000 to 120,000 with the city surpassing 133,000 in early 2024.
