Forum:Tarephia Cooperation Council/Tare
As we all know, the Tare is the TCC's unified currency project. 9 countries use it completely and 13 partially. However, not much seems to have been decided about it. Therefore, I would like to propose the following points to be revisited and/or agreed upon:
- Value of the currency
- Design
- Symbol
- Denominations
- History

Value of the currency
Possible models:
- Dependant on the Tarezone members' economies
- Dependant on the value of one or multiple real-world currencies

- I double checked to be sure- I believe at one point we'd already decided somewhere on the old wiki to have 1 tare equal to about 0.85 Unified Standard Dollars. I mainly remember this because I had pegged the Freedemian freedin to the Tare at 1.10 tare = 1 freedin, and come up with the approximate value of 1 freedin at about 0.932 Unified Standard Dollars based on the Tare peg. Checked with Chazeltine just because my memory is fuzzy on the matter- they seem to remember the same. --Ernestpkirby (talk) 03:21, 19 December 2023 (UTC)
- Looks like further confirmation- Brunanter mentioned the Barzona Lira is pegged at 1 lira = 21 tares and valued at 1 lira = 24.965344 Unified Standard Dollars. This breaks down to a tare being worth about 0.841 USD- so 0.84-0.85 USD seems to be the confirmed value of a Tare. --Ernestpkirby (talk) 05:34, 19 December 2023 (UTC)
Design
Symbol
I regard the current symbol in the wiki, ※, as kind of questionable and not really looking like a currency symbol. I would suggest a symbol like Ŧ or ₮. --xioma_sg talk 13:41, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
- From the Tarephia Cooperation Council, "the Tare has its roots in Tigeria and Kotel. The two countries were using ※ as the symbol for the Tare before it was introduced in the TCC. The symbol is derived from the character for rice (米), from the days when many Tigerines and Koteliers paid their daily wages in rice. The symbol was simplified when the currency got introduced and was taken over by the TCC." So ※ is a modified symbol for the character 米, and is historically tied to the practice of paying wages in rice. Chazeltine (talk) 14:11, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
- I've always liked the Tare symbol (irregardless of its history), I'd be in favor of keeping it as is. --Lithium-Ion | [1] (talk) 18:30, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
- The current symbol is a little strange, but i also don't know if we really need a unique symbol for the tare. The xioma proposals are a bit more conventional but we can go as simple as just putting a regular T. Can be fully spelled as tare, Tare, tares, T, Ts. ts. or any combination that fits the languages of TCC. Brunanter (talk) 00:39, 20 December 2023 (UTC)

Denominations
From the Tigeria article, I've written "The Tare (symbol: ※; code: TAR) is the official currency of Tigeria. It is abbreviated as TA※, and is referred to as the tare or the Tigerine tare. The tare is subdivided into one hundred piastres (p). Banknotes are produced in denominations of ※5, ※10, ※20, ※50, ※100, ※500, and ※100. Coins are produced in denominations of ※2, ※1, 50p, 25p, 10p, 5p, and 1p." Chazeltine (talk) 14:11, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
- Do you think each country with the Tare as its sole currency would make its own notes/coins, maybe omitting some denominations? Obviously everything would remain managed by the Central Bank, but perhaps it would allow countries to customize their use of the Tare to their own language etc. --Lithium-Ion | [2] (talk) 18:30, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
- If we are trying to be like the euro then no, it would have to be a single design theme using either all official languages or only the major ones. More decentralized, unique designs, picking and choosing denominations etc almost defeats the purpose of the common currency in extending across borders. History
From the Tarephia Cooperation Council, it's written that "The Tarephia Cooperation Council introduced a currency called Tare upon inception in 1984. The currency is used in some of the member states. It eases the process of money exchange and financial exchanges. The Tarephian Central Bank, which manages the Tare, is located in Hexagonia City, Tigeria." There's some important context to add: the Tare was used in a currency union between Tigeria, Kotel (and later Inxigne and Meilan) before the TCC came into existence in 1984, and it was adopted and introduced as the TCC currency. The central bank of Tigeria was rebranded as the Tarephian Central Bank to continue its banking duties over the currency as the central bank of the TCC. Chazeltine (talk) 14:11, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
