The Territory ID (from OpenGeofiction:Territories, e.g. AR123a) and proposed name of the country |
UL12k - Republic of Veridia

An overview of climate, topography and landscape of the country. It is advised to also create a sketch, you can add a link to this (hosted on imgur or similar) |
Veridia has a mountanious and hilly inland and a fertile, mostly flat, coast. The highest peak would be ~1030m. The country is very forested, which is its main industry.

Human geography | |
---|---|
A brief description of the territory demographics, economic development, land occupation, infrastructure and mapping style |
Veridia is a small country. Its population would be centred around the coast in one of the three cities, or in more rural areas where small towns and villages are very close to eachother. In non coastal regions, people might live in the larger towns in valleys or in smaller towns or villages which are isolated from the rest of the country by dense forest or tall mountains. The more remote regions might have some tourism industry, helping with infrastructure in the town.
Motorways and roads that are more than single-carriageway would be few and far between and concentrated in the cities. The road network is well maintained, but is made up of lots of small rural lanes, often made with tarmac or dirt.
Most people live in single houses outside of the cities, but in population centres some people might live in flats or in social housing estates. Buildings don't usually go higher than five stories with the tallest being an office building at 7 stories, in the capital city of Mortar.
The country makes its wealth from exporting lumber and also industrial products like airplane parts, pharmeceuticals and (most importantly) military and commercial aircraft with the state owned Aeris company. Veridia is expensive to live in (atleast in the cities) but has high social benefits and a good healthcare system. Crime is low, but not non-existent. Veridia's unguarded ports are a hub for smuggling narcotics into larger, neighboring countries. For this reason, the country has tight border controls in place.
Veridia has an aging population almost everywhere except the cities, as most young people are moving there for education or work. The population of the country is still rising, however.
History & culture | |
---|---|
A brief description of the intended culture and language |
The language spoken in Veridia is Veridian, which is English but with a few word changes and it follows more rules. It is a bit systematic, with almost all rules being followed (Mouse, Mice - Moose, Mooce - House, Hice - Why, Whye - Glyph, Glyphe)
The country has an ancient language, Tróman (a naming conlang i have made) which is used in place names. Mortar = "Mótarborg" (Gold/Rich Castletown)
The culture in Veridia is diverse but the country is primarily roman catholic. Most events revolve around pubs, or Tróvars, which are everywhere (for example some small villages can have two or three Tróvars) and drinking is a big part of the culture. The legal drinking age is 16 in Veridia. In recent years, the National Guards (police) have been trying to crack down on DUIs and other drinking related crimes by instilling harsh punishment for alcohol related crimes for the last 30 years. People in Veridia are very welcoming. Traditionally, this is because the country can reach freezing temperatures most of the year so leaving someone out in the cold is leaving them to die. Until the '90s, when new guidelines were put in place, most front doors in the country weren't locked or didn't have locks. Veridia has a large immigrant population but is having trouble housing them all. This has lead to a recent change in planning laws which will allow for the counstruction of more houses quicker.
There is a rivalry between two regions in Veridia, the Centar Region and the Socialist Republic of Veridia (1940-1986). In the early 80's a civil war broke out on the mainland part of the country and the areas are still scarred by it. War broke out was because the Centar region (which was more traditional, and opposed to the socialist government at the time, who were exploiting their land and trying to plan an atomgrad there) was being neglected, discluded from voting and even had their borders on lockdown at one point. The war ended in 1986 with a coup d'etat in Mortar, leading to a series of reforms and the current government being put in place.

To support your request provide links to areas of OGF mapping which showcase your mapping skill. Mapping relevant to the requested theme & geography is especially useful | |
The {{coord}} template can optionally be used to link to the OGF map - it results in a nice formatted link. Or you can paste in a URL. |
I've been mapping over the past few months on BG36 (though I only really picked up about a week ago).
Some parts of the map haven't been updated in a while, like Kilkarnal Town, which is way off in scale (though nearby Toolavally goes in the other direction). The place on the map I think is most up to real life scale is Oliver City (only the city centre exists) which I've been using the OGF scale helper tool on (Cork, Ireland). I have started using JOSM - which can be seen in the only fully modeled town, Nurling which i think unfortunately is way off in scale (and also has a few inacuracies like buildings clipping inside eachother which I haven't got round to fixing.) The Abha Mountains and Caliban River are the regions I'm most proud of because theyre inspired by my locality. ([1]) and they would also be relevant to the theme of this territory.

- Hello! I am not an admin but I have some tips for mapping to scale. Firstly though it would require JOSM but when you download it and set it up you can use the scale box in the bottom left of your screen to get lengths of items. It also gives you some other details next to it that can be helpful with angles. And if you want to go the next step and get really accurate buildings you can download the "Measurement" Plugin. It would give you total area of the areas selected. I would say that JOSM is just easier to use for OGF because you are not tracing anything and its satisfying getting the scale right and make a nice area. Hope this helps! - I have started using JOSM before but haven't tried out the Measurement plugin. I'll download it now and use it for future edits. Thanks a million! Veni Vidi Vici (talk) 09:26, 27 July 2024 (UTC)
Hello! I would like to reiterate the feedback given by Bixelkoven about the previous application, that its general conception and plan is a good fit for the region. I also commend you for taking the feedback to heart and trying to make some changes and improvements. At the same time, it has been just a few days, and there was a lot to work on. I am going to pause this application for one month. Let's take some time for you to get some practice in and keep making good improvement.
Continue to work on the scale of buildings, but also the spacing of them from roads. The measurement tool in JOSM is very powerful in this regard, since you'll be able to know down to the centimetre how far apart things are. I would also encourage you to keep working on the rural mapping. The area of the Abha Mountains and Caliban River is a good start, but it needs work here too. A couple thoughts about rural mapping. Envision the landforms first and the size that they would be first. Then lay in the rivers and streams accordingly. These should highlight the landform and make it visible. The human geography then flows from that. Right now, the wooded area is a bit indiscriminate in shape, and it is hard to get a sense of how the land lays out by how the roads and rail meander. I think this is where your attention to detail can help you: detail up the shape of the wooded areas, showing meadows and farms in there too. Putting that level of detail in the rural areas that you've been working on in Oliver can go a long way to selling it. Remember that you're applying for an entire territory and not just a city.
Keep working hard on this and don't lose heart. You are getting better and making progress. That's why I'm not just closing this out with a rejection. Let's pause it for one month, and we can revisit it.
Happy mapping. — Alessa (talk) 18:26, 28 July 2024 (UTC)
After a month of editing BG36 I have began to lose interest for this territory or culture and have ultimately decided to change my mind about it and apply for the island of AN144 instead as my first territory. This was a mix of losing the nordic fascination (it was replaced with a Jamaican one) and also the fact that Uletha mightn't be a great place to start. I also imagine an island would be more beginner friendly and less territory to map out. Thanks for getting me to put nore work into my BG territory and for your feedback, which will be very useful down the line.
