Tarrumarca, (Castellanese: Tarrumárca) officially the Tarrumarcan Federation, (Castellanese: Federacion Tarrumarcana) is a sovereign state in Eastern Tarephia, located on the Sea of Uthyra. The country shares a land border with Tarephia Equatorial to the west, Firmania to the north, Deira and Vodeo to the southeast.
The country occupies a land area of roughly 339 thousand square kilometers (~131 thousand square miles,) making it the ### largest country in the world. It also has a population of around 20 million people, making it the ### most populous country in the world. The capital of Tarrumarca is TBD, and its largest city is TBD.
The entire area of Tarrumarca was originally inhabited by many ethnic tribes, most notably the Gadzunis, Tacapan, and other small tribes, dominating the region since (time) and would continue to do so for the next (few hundred) years. Castellanese colonists would arrive and conquer the territory, around the 1600s, reforming it into a Castellanese colony in the 1620s. The native peoples agreed to end the war with the colonists, however, they were later driven out to the mountains. After three centuries under colonial rule, Tarrumarca finally gained independence in 1901 but suffered from political and economic instability. Under president and dictator Carlos Pinero Nieves (1929-49), the country began to stabilize and improve its economy. However political discontent, corruption, and nepotism led to his downfall, and the military took over in 1949.
A couple of decades later, in 1970, the Tarrumarcan Civil War began when leftist university students involved in protests were silenced, which resulted in the Gadzonian territorial government and rebels voting for seceding their territory from the Federation. In July 1972, the capital city was besieged with violence between the military, pro-democracy demonstrators, ordinary civilians, and the Maritima Provincial Police. The dictator, Gen. Artemio Busqueda resigned (and was later captured and executed thereafter) and was replaced by the capital city mayor Felipe Cortezano, who helped transition the country into gradual democratic rule. In 1974, the civil war finally ended due to a lack of support, and rebel civilians were either granted amnesty, jailed, or exiled abroad. The later 20th century saw Gustavo Dominguez Mejía become president in 1978. After his ten-year presidency in 1988, he reformed the country, instituted land reform, armed forces reform, abolished military involvement with the government, and declared a national social safety net law to protect the poor and economically disadvantaged citizens. He ruled the country under the Progressive Party and adopted a market capitalist and liberal economy.
Today, Tarrumarca is a member of the Assembly of Nations and Tarephia Cooperation Council.
